My studio is in the old BC Hydro building, now called the Electra, located at the corner of Burrard and Nelson Streets. One of the last examples of Vancouver's modernist architecture from the 1950's. The green, blue and black mosaic tiles that decorate parts of the building have become iconic and a signature of Vancouver's downtown buildings. Interestingly the original tiles that were to be used on the building were shipped from Italy on the Andrea Doria which sank in New York Harbor in 1956. The architects and builders had to quickly order a second choice for tiles from the United States.
The photos show the exterior of the Electra at night, the mosaic tile decoration, two views from the roof. The first view looks south showing One Wall Centre, the second view is looking west showing the Westend including Nelson Park in the foreground and English Bay.
